About May Erlewine
May Erlewine writes songs about what hurts people, what strengthens them, and what brings them together. The American singer-songwriter from Michigan blends personal experiences with social commentary. Her music juxtaposes pain and hope, and has earned her a loyal following far beyond her home state.
Raised in a home steeped in art and music, Erlewine began writing her own songs at an early age. As a teenager, she hitchhiked across the U.S., gained stage experience, and met people whose stories continue to shape her songwriting to this day. Her commitment to environmental protection, social justice, and creative self-determination is just as much a part of her work as her pursuit of musical expression.
With What It Takes, Erlewine provides a powerful, electric framework for her personal lyrics. Produced by Theo Katzman, the album was recorded live at Cinnamon Ranch in northern Michigan, featuring Phil Cook on piano and keyboards, among others. It combines the emotional openness of her songwriting with a bold band sound.
