About Laurel
LAUREL has always been inspired by musicians who wear their hearts on their sleeves. This was evident on 2018's self-produced album 'Dogviolet', which plumbed the depths of the human psyche in search of answers about love and grief, as well as EPs 'Petrol Bloom' and 'Limbo Cherry', which took the same ideas with a slicker sound. These records earned LAUREL many fans and outstanding praise from magazines such as The Observer, i-D and VOGUE.
"Palpitations", the luminous second album, is a reinvention of epic proportions: a full-throated reintroduction to a musician previously known for windswept pop and grunge-influenced folk. Bright, passionate and ruthless in its pursuit of emotional truth, it's the work of a mature songwriter with a restless spirit: LAUREL in her definitive form. All of life's highs and lows are contained in these 11 songs, coated in glossy 80s varnish and drenched in excitement and ecstasy. Everything you need to know about this new version of LAUREL is already in the album title: "This album is full of adrenaline - everything is felt hard," she says. "Heart palpitations in the body aren't usually a sign of something really bad, it's usually emotional. I liked the idea that something can feel so strong that it makes your heart pound." This idea has always been LAUREL's modus operandi, but never before has it been so palpable to fans.
The upcoming album was recorded with LAUREL's longtime collaborator Jeremy Malvin, aka Chrome Sparks, with additional contributions from Mallrat and Troye Sivan collaborator Styalz Fuego and Kyle Shearer (Caroline Polachek, Rina Sawayama).
From the opening track "45 Degrees," you can hear LAUREL's new commitment to sharper, more direct and uncompromising songwriting; throughout the album, she channels yearning desire into top-notch, unassailable hooks.
